so, i have graves disease (overactive thyroid). because apparently i need more than one disease. diabetes isn't enough to deal with? no? here, have graves. awesome, thanks. (i have learned this is not uncommon - thyroid problems in type 1 diabetics AND women)
anyway, dr. awesome told me i would have to take a pill every day for a year to keep graves in remission. okay, no biggie. i can handle that.
well. that's a no go. i am allergic to the drug that's in those pills, that option is out. so, i'm having my thyroid removed. i meet with the surgeon today to discuss it. probably won't have the surgery until the end of may ... i've never had surgery before.
after my thyroid is out, i'll have to take a thyroid hormone pill the rest of my life. i can handle a pill a day.
have you had surgery? i have the usual nervousness about it, because it's the first (and hopefully only) time i've had to have it. how'd you deal with it?

ReplyDeleteYou'll be OK, I promise! I've had surgery 3x (not counting dental), and yes, things can sometimes be wonky w/anesthesia (being honest - happened to me before), but you'll be in excellent hands no matter what! And I have anxiety disorder, so I get panicky over anything medical, esp. surgery, but the trick is to distract yourself during the pre-op stuff like the IV. Why? Because they will probably start a relaxing drug right away, and then you are a lot calmer. :) Up until the surgery, though, try and think about recovery and talk out your fears and worries as much as possible with your friends/family - that always helps me!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness, yuck! i'm sorry that you're having to deal with all of this. i've never had surgery either, so i have no advice to offer you.
ReplyDeleteplease know you'll be in my thoughts, and let me know if i can do anything. <3
I had surgery in 2008 so I could have my babies. Easy peasy and I found out that anesthesia makes me randy. I told Eric I wanted cookies when I woke up and when he asked me what kind, I told him his. Ha! But I have no doubt that you will hand surgery it's ass, Mer. You are an amazing individual. Clearly. Let the Laster girls know if there is anything we can do!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I am so sorry! Both my husband and I have hypothyroidism--underactive thyroid. He is the diabetic, and I am the woman, so we both got hit, I guess. Taking the hormone supplement is easy, I have been doing it for 11 years now. But as a warning, do NOT skip it if you can help it. The side effects of low/no thyroid hormone for me includes depression, which will even creep in after 1-2 days of skipping.
